Ultrasound Q&A

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to detect or rule out
medical problems to prevent complications.

Your provider places a transducer over your skin to emit sound waves and view organs and other tissues inside
your body. The procedure is fast, noninvasive, and painless without downtime.

Why might I need an ultrasound?

Your OB/GYN specialist might recommend ultrasound if you exhibit certain symptoms, are at risk of a medical
problem, or you’re pregnant. Ultrasound technology can help:

  • Evaluate blood flow
  • Guide needles during biopsies
  • View your uterus and ovaries
  • Monitor your unborn baby’s health
  • Examine breast lumps
  • Diagnose gallbladder disease
  • Evaluate bone health
  • Assess joint problems
  • Detect genital issues
  • Evaluate your thyroid gland

If you’re pregnant or think you might be pregnant, ultrasound helps your provider confirm pregnancy
or evaluate the health of your unborn baby.

Is ultrasound right for me?

To determine if you’re a candidate for ultrasound, your practitioner reviews your medical history and
asks about any symptoms you may have. They also complete a physical exam to evaluate your overall health.

If you have signs or symptoms of a health problem that’s not related to obstetrics or gynecology,
your provider can refer you to a highly qualified specialist.

What happens during an ultrasound?

During the ultrasound, you relax on a comfortable chair or exam table.
Your provider may complete a transabdominal ultrasound by placing gel on your abdomen or pelvic area
and moving a transducer over your skin to emit sound waves.

During a transvaginal ultrasound, your OB/GYN specialist places a tiny transducer inside your vagina
after coating it with gel.

What happens after ultrasound?

After an ultrasound, there’s no downtime so you can resume your regular activities right away.
When your OB/GYN specialist receives your results, they review them with you to let you know if treatment is necessary.

For example, you may require further diagnostic testing, medications, or a minimally invasive procedure.

If you’re pregnant, experiencing unusual symptoms, or are at risk of a women’s health problem,
schedule an appointment with Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology, LLC by phone or book online today
to find out if ultrasound is right for you.
