Obstetrics Q&A

 What are obstetrics?

Obstetrics is a specialized area of medicine focused on the needs of women before, during, and after pregnancy.
The experienced team at Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology, LLC provides exceptional women’s
health care throughout each stage of life, including pregnancy.

At Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology, LLC, the board-certified obstetricians partner with you during your pregnancy,
providing the exceptional care and attention you need every step of the way.

Your obstetrics care includes pre-pregnancy visits, ongoing prenatal care, postpartum care, as well as labor and delivery.

The OB/GYN team delivers babies at the Maternity & Newborn Care Center at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, New Jersey.

When should I start obstetric care?

The team at Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology, LLC determines when you should start obstetric care
based on your gynecological and pregnancy history. However, in most cases, the first prenatal appointment is scheduled
3–4 weeks after your positive pregnancy test.

What can I expect during my first prenatal visit?

Your first prenatal visit is one of the most thorough visits. Before meeting with your obstetrician, you first undergo
an in-office fetal ultrasound at the state-of-the-art ultrasound center. Each office has advanced ultrasound technology
for your convenience.

The fetal ultrasound confirms pregnancy and assists your obstetrician in determining your due date.

After your ultrasound, you meet with your obstetrician, who asks detailed questions about your medical, gynecological,
and surgical history, as well as your family history. They will also ask questions about your partner’s medical and family history.

Your obstetrician then performs a physical and pelvic exam and may run diagnostic tests to assess health and screen for
diseases, such as urinalysis, blood work, and Pap smear.

For healthy, low-risk pregnancies, you can expect regular prenatal care visits based on your pregnancy stage:

  • Weeks 4–28: monthly visits
  • Weeks 29–35: bimonthly visits
  • Weeks 36 to birth: weekly visits

If your pregnancy is high risk (e.g., carrying twins or having a chronic health condition), your prenatal visits may be more frequent.

What are common obstetrics tests?

You may undergo some obstetric tests throughout your pregnancy. Some are standard, while others may be recommended due
to family history or maternal age. Standard obstetric tests include:

  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • Nuchal translucency test
  • Blood glucose challenge
  • Blood test for anemia

The obstetric team also offers prenatal genetic screening.

To schedule your obstetric appointment, contact Advanced Obstetrics & Gynecology, LLC by phone or book online today.
